Overview

This module defines intra-abdominal hypertension and abdominal compartment syndrome and their parameters, discusses their complications, risk factors, and causes and explains the measurement and ongoing monitoring of intra-abdominal pressure.

Learning Objective

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Define intra-abdominal pressure and normal parameters for a healthy adult and child
  • Define intra-abdominal hypertension and the ranges for grades I to IV of intra-abdominal hypertension
  • Discuss the potential complications of intra-abdominal hypertension
  • Define abdominal compartment syndrome and parameters for an adult and child
  • Discuss the potential complications of abdominal compartment syndrome
  • Outline the four categories of risk factors and causes of elevated intra-abdominal pressure
