Overview

This module discusses complex trauma and the disorders that arise from the pervasive impacts of complex trauma.

Before undertaking this second part in the series on trauma informed care, we recommend completing the first part: Trauma-informed care in nursing practice – Implementation and client management.

Learning Objective

At the end of this eLearning activity participants will be able to:

  • Appreciate the profound impact that health professionals' responses can have on survivors of trauma and complex trauma.
  • Understand the factors leading to re-traumatisation and inadvertent harm to clients.
  • Discuss and implement the guiding principles of trauma-informed care.
  • Screen for and react to disclosures of trauma and abuse appropriately.
  • Engage effectively with trauma survivors to promote safety and trust and enable recovery.
  • Practice self-care and prevent being affected by vicarious trauma.
