Overview

Hypertensive disorders are a major cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality.

This module provides an update for midwives on the assessment and management that is required to help prevent or minimise life-threatening complications from hypertensive disorders and promote successful outcomes for mothers and babies.

Learning Objective

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Identify the blood pressure parameters that define hypertension and severe hypertension in pregnancy.
  • Explain how to accurately measure the blood pressure of a pregnant woman.
  • Describe the features of chronic hypertension and its treatment.
  • Discuss the features of gestational hypertension, relevant investigations, and treatment.
  • Describe the features of eclampsia and its treatment.
  • Outline the potential long-term health consequences and recommended health checks for women who have had hypertensive disorders in pregnancy.
