Medications: what are the risks?

Medication errors are the most commonly reported clinical incident in many healthcare settings.


This module is part of a series on medication safety. It provides a review of the basic mathematics required for anyone performing drug calculations.

  • Not everyone will need to do this module.
  • However, for those who wish to review how to calculate fractions and decimals, how to do division and multiplication, and how to write numbers correctly, it will prove to be a valuable resource.


This module is consistent with the Australian National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, Standard Four: Medication Safety.

Learning Objective

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Convert fractions to decimals and vice versa.
  • Do simple multiplications.
  • Convert metric units.
  • Perform division of numbers.
  • Write numbers correctly.
