Overview

The skin is a complex organ system. It acts as a barrier to injury and infection. A thorough knowledge of how skin damage is caused, how to prevent skin damage and how to assess for damage is required for all nurses and assistants in nursing who provide providing direct patient care.

This module discusses how skin damage is caused, how to prevent skin damage and how to identify skin damage.

This module assumes prior knowledge of the anatomy of the skin.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Be able to recognise the signs and symptoms of damage and infection.
  • Be aware of the factors that increase the risk of damage and infection.
