Neurodegenerative disorders are a group of progressive neurological diseases that cause worsening motor, cognitive and autonomic dysfunction over time. Recent advances in international research, best-practice evidence, and clinical guidelines have underscored the role of physiotherapy in the management of neurodegenerative disorders.
Physiotherapy guidelines based on systematic reviews of best available evidence have since been published for many of these conditions. The following module will review neurodegenerative disorders with a particular focus on Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.
This module is about the role of physiotherapy in the treatment of patients with neurodegenerative disorders. Most patients are referred to physiotherapists for this treatment. It is nonetheless important for those involved in the nursing care of people with neurodegenerative disorders to understand the various treatments provided. It will assist nurses to support their patients in achieving their treatment and rehabilitation goals.
The module has a particular focus on those with Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.
