Overview

Neurodegenerative disorders are a group of progressive neurological diseases that cause worsening motor, cognitive and autonomic dysfunction over time. Recent advances in international research, best-practice evidence, and clinical guidelines have underscored the role of physiotherapy in the management of neurodegenerative disorders.

Physiotherapy guidelines based on systematic reviews of best available evidence have since been published for many of these conditions. The following module will review neurodegenerative disorders with a particular focus on Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.

This module is about the role of physiotherapy in the treatment of patients with neurodegenerative disorders. Most patients are referred to physiotherapists for this treatment. It is nonetheless important for those involved in the nursing care of people with neurodegenerative disorders to understand the various treatments provided. It will assist nurses to support their patients in achieving their treatment and rehabilitation goals.

The module has a particular focus on those with Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.

Learning Objective

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Describe neurodegenerative disorders including clinical features, symptoms and specific conditions.
  • Understand the unique features of Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease.
  • Describe the goals of physiotherapy in the management of neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Outline the recommended interventions based on patient condition or stage of illness.
  • Outline outcome measures that are appropriate for identifying baseline function.
