Overview

This module discusses the application of the three pillars of patient blood management (PBM) to minimise patient exposure to the three key risk factors for adverse postoperative outcomes.

It is based on individualised assessment, identification, and treatment of issues across all phases of the perioperative period.

Learning Objective

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Describe the steps involved in Pillar 1 of patient blood management - Optimising red blood cell mass, over the three perioperative phases
  • Discuss the process for Pillar 2 of patient blood management - Minimising bleeding and blood loss, over the three perioperative phases
  • Explain what is required for Pillar 3 of patient blood management - Optimising the patient’s tolerance of anaemia, over the three perioperative phases
