Overview

This module reviews the principles of pain management in palliative care. It describes what palliative care is and why pain management is essential to promoting quality of life in end-of-life care.

It also discusses the challenges faced by those working in palliative care settings to provide adequate pain management to patients and individual differences in patients that may complicate efforts to achieve adequate pain control.

At the end of this module participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles of pain management in palliative care
  • Be familiar with pain descriptors and the different types of pain
  • Recognize the difference between simple and complex pain management
  • Identify some of the barriers to effective pain management in palliative care
